Refrigerants in Vending Machines – What the Rating Plate Labels Mean

1 min read

A refrigerated machine's rating plate shows its refrigerant marking. Here is what it tells you.

A refrigerant is the substance circulating in the machine's cooling circuit, taking heat out of the product compartment and releasing it outside. Its code, such as R290, is on the rating plate. Work on the cooling circuit is done by technicians with the right qualifications.

How the cooling circuit works

The compressor pumps refrigerant to the condenser, where it releases heat. The refrigerant then expands and absorbs heat from inside the machine in the evaporator. The cycle repeats while a thermostat or the controller holds the temperature.

What the code tells you

The code identifies the type of refrigerant, which affects service requirements among other things. The manufacturer gives the details in the documentation.

Who can work on the circuit

Work on cooling circuits requires qualifications, and with fluorinated gases an F-gas certificate. Refrigerated devices such as vending coolers (publisher's site) are serviced by a specialist.

FAQ

Where do I find the refrigerant code? On the rating plate and in the documentation.

Can I top up the refrigerant myself? No. That is a job for a qualified technician.
