Offline Card Transactions – What Happens When the Connection Drops

1 min read

A machine in a basement or warehouse may lose signal. Some payment systems can then work offline.

When a card reader loses its connection, depending on the payment provider it may decline transactions or accept them offline – storing them and settling once it reconnects. Offline mode usually has limits and rules set by the payment provider and card schemes.

How offline mode works

The reader stores transaction data locally and sends it when the connection returns. The operator usually bears the risk of a later decline, so offline mode is often restricted.

How to reduce the problem

Placement

Check coverage before installing. General tips are on the page about places for vending machines (publisher's site).

FAQ

Will I be charged twice offline? That should not happen. If in doubt, contact the machine operator.

Does every reader have an offline mode? No. It depends on the device and payment provider.
