A weight-sensing shelf detects how much the removed items weigh and works out what the customer took.
In a weight-shelf machine, each shelf or shelf section sits on a load cell. When a customer removes an item, the controller registers the weight change and, using the product-to-position mapping and item weights, works out what was taken. Products must be stocked carefully in their assigned spots.
Product mapping
Each shelf position is mapped to a product and its unit weight. The operator sets this in the system when planning the layout.
Limits
- Items with similar weights are harder to tell apart on one position.
- An item put back in the wrong spot can skew the bill.
- Load cells need periodic calibration.
Where it is used
Mostly in pay-first vending coolers (publisher's site).
FAQ
Does it work with any product? Best with products that have a consistent package weight.
What if a customer puts an item back elsewhere? The system may miscalculate. The operator corrects such cases.
