The MDB Protocol – How a Machine Talks to Payment Devices

1 min read

MDB is the common language between machines and payment devices. It lets one maker's card reader work in another maker's machine.

MDB (Multi-Drop Bus) is a communication standard in which the machine's controller connects over a single bus to several payment devices – a coin mechanism, a bill acceptor, and a card reader. It defines how devices exchange information about credit, sales, and change, so hardware from different makers can work together.

How the bus works

The controller acts as master and polls each device in turn. Each has its own address. When a customer inserts a coin or taps a card, the device reports it to the controller.

Why a standard

MDB in practice

Many devices, including those on the page with vending machines (publisher's site), use MDB for payments. The manufacturer confirms compatibility.

FAQ

Does every machine support MDB? Not every one. Check the machine's specs.

Does MDB carry card data? MDB carries payment information. Card data is handled by the reader and the payment provider.
