Telemetry, coin validator, spiral, planogram – the most common vending machine terms explained in plain English.

The vending industry has its own vocabulary. This glossary collects the terms you will see most often and explains them without technical jargon. We will keep expanding it.

Vending Machine

A self-service unit that dispenses a selected product or prepares a drink after payment. A modern vending machine combines a dispensing mechanism, a payment system, and control electronics.

Card Reader

A module that accepts card and mobile payments. It communicates with the machine's control board and with the payment processor.

Smart Fridge

A refrigerated cabinet with a lock that opens after payment is authorized. Customers take the product themselves, and the system charges for what was removed.

Operator

The company that places machines, restocks products, services equipment, and handles sales accounting.

Planogram

A layout plan showing which product sits in which spiral or on which shelf.

Spiral

The part that dispenses products in snack machines. It turns one full rotation and the product drops into the pickup area.

Pickup Area

Where the customer collects the product. Many machines have a flap that prevents reaching inside.

Telemetry

Remote transmission of machine data such as stock levels, sales, and errors. It lets operators plan restocking without checking each unit in person.

Coin Validator

A module that recognizes coins. It rejects coins it cannot identify and reports the value to the controller.

Change Dispenser

The part of the coin system that stores coins and pays out change.

Elevator

A mechanism that lowers the product into the pickup area instead of dropping it. It is used for fragile items.
