Card Readers in Vending Machines: How a Transaction Works

1 min read

What happens after you tap your card on a vending machine reader – authorization, dispensing, and settlement.

When you tap a card, the reader sends an authorization request to the payment processor. After approval, the machine dispenses the product and the transaction is settled.

The Process

Select a product, tap the card, authorize, dispense, confirm. Some systems first place a hold on the amount and charge it after the dispense is confirmed.

Connectivity

The reader needs a network connection, usually via a cellular module or local network.

When Something Goes Wrong

If the product does not drop, a system with a drop sensor can cancel the charge. If in doubt, contact the operator.

FAQ

Can I pay by phone? Yes, if the reader supports contactless payments.

Why does payment sometimes take longer? Usually because of weaker network coverage at the location.
